"If I build it, they will come."
Remember that great Kevin Costner movie, Field of Dreams? In the film Costner builds a baseball diamond in his cornfield, and within no time at all it was populated with some of America's baseball greats. He told himself "If I build it, they will come." While this makes a great movie idea, it couldn't be more wrong when it comes to the Internet. Simply building a website does not automatically mean people will visit it! People won't just show up at your site, they have to find it first. That's where search engine optimization (SEO) comes in.
Search Engines
The vast majority of Internet users use search engines to find what they're looking for. The key to getting visitors to your site is to show up on the first few pages of the search results. Of course, the best position in the rankings is within the first three results. However - people often look at the entire first page, and frequently look at the second and third pages as well. Either way, the higher you are on the search engines, the better.
Search engine optimization is a process which makes your website more "search-engine" friendly. It involves the following steps:
